Indian River & Cabrits National Park

Drive along Dominica's West Coast to Portsmouth in the north.
In Portsmouth take a rowboat trip up the Indian River, which got its name
because the Kalinago people (carib Indians) once lived on the higher ground up
the river and used it as a route to the sea.
The vegetation along the banks of the river is dominated by sedges swamp ferns
and the towering and intricately buttressed Mang trees {Pterocarpus Officinalis}.
Herons, kingfishers, land crabs and sometimes iguanas can be seen in the trees or
on the river banks.

The song of the Scaly Breasted Thrasher is often heard along the way.
When the rowboats go to  where the river narrows we will get out and take a walk
along the bank of the river, or go to the bush bar for a drink.
The duration of the river trip is about one hour.

Next visit the historic Cabrits National Park, which is an 18th century Garrison
built by the Britsh between 1770 and 1815.
in its years of dominance the Garrison had over fifty major structures.
Most of the construction was done by the British but the French made significant
additions during their occupation from 1778 to 1783.
The Cabrits was abandoned as a military post in 1854, today its only advancing
ememy, is the army of time, which it is galantly defending itself against.
After the Cabrits return to base.

Time 4 - 5 hours
